Small Talks: How WI Prevents Underage Drinking

Why talk to kids about alcohol? Underage drinking is a real issue in Wisconsin and can start as early as age 8. But simple, casual conversations with caring adults can make a big difference in prevention.

Underage drinking in Wisconsin

Underage drinking is declining nationwide—but Wisconsin teens aren't keeping up. While national rates dropped 7% from 2019–2021, Wisconsin only saw a 4% drop.

  • 49% of Wisconsin teens have tried alcohol
  • 1 in 6 tried it by age 13

  • 2 out of 3 don’t see it as risky

Why start talking when they're 8?

Kids start forming opinions about alcohol as early as age 8. Talking to them early helps counter messages from friends and media. It’s easier than you think—and we’ve got tips to help you start the conversation and handle tough questions.

Understand why kids drink

Underage drinking isn’t a rite of passage—it’s a community-wide issue affecting all kinds of Wisconsin families. Kids may drink due to peer pressure, stress, or harmful marketing. Families aren’t to blame, but they can make a difference.

Free Safe Ride

  • The Tavern League of Wisconsin and our members are proud to serve our community. One of our top priorities is to keep our patrons safe. That is why we offer the SafeRide program. The goal of SafeRide is to eliminate drunk driving on Wisconsin’s roadways. As always, we encourage you to drink responsibly. However, if you feel like you’ve had one too many, ask your bartender if their establishment is a Tavern League member offering the SafeRide program.
